What do I need to start hunting deer?

deer hunting
knightinsoularmor asked:

A buddy and I have been shooting rifles for years but have never really gone hunting. We both have well-maintained 30-06’s but don’t have much else for equipment. What equipment do you recommend to get started hunting deer? (We live in East TX btw).

A good hunting knife, rope for dragging and hanging the deer for dressing, good quality boots, flashlight (because you’ll probably go to and from the deer stand in the dark), warm clothes (layer 2 or 3 shirts), water bottle, snacks (I like sunflower seeds), and a camera to take pictures of your trophy.
    Happy hunting

ps: Don’t forget the hunting license!

Forget all the worry about fancy equipment. I once took a bull moose apart with nothing but a standard Leatherman Tool………. I had to drive on short notice to another part of Alaska where the season opened earlier than where I lived – I had a tag, had a rifle…….. and stumbled across legal moose 6am opening day. Wasn’t till after I shot it noticed my usually knife kit was not with me – but my Leatherman and diamond sharpener were. You never saw anyone so happy to see a 2.5″ knife blade! LOL. I was hard pressed to get it all into my Jeep. Worse – a few miles down the road we ran into several legal caribou and my wife at the time had a tag for them…….. they were right beside the road about 50 feet way and an easy shot. But – no room in the Jeep!!

What you need to do is spend time in places where the deer are at. Grab a camera – this is a really good way to practice on deer in the off season – and get out where the deer are and start getting some eyeball time on them. All the hunting gear and gadgets in the world won’t be any help if you can’t get one in front of your rifle. When you’re proficient enough in the woods to find two or three legal deer a day – then start wondering what gear might be handy. By this time you will have a pretty good lay of the land and know what will be useful and what might be extra weight. Sometimes what works in one area – you need something totally different for a place just a few miles away.

If hunters spent more time in the field in the off season and less time drooling over catalogs…….. they would be much more successful.

    Hope this helps.

Well, first of all, you need a hunting license.

Second, you need an all-weather jacket with an optional hood. The jacket should be orange or red. If you can’t get that color (unlikely) get an orange or red vest to wear over it. This color coding will stop other hunters from shooting you by mistake.

Third, a pair of good boots. Hi-Tec is a good brand, but have the salesman assist you.

Fourth, a small pack (fanny pack is good) in which you can carry miscellaneous items like a flashlight, snacks, mosquito repellent, sunblock, first aid kit, sunglasses, and either your cell phone or a long-distance walkie-talkie. If you get turned around (and I don’t know a hunter who hasn’t gotten lost at least once) you want to have the essentials for survival.

Fifth, a good hunting knife for dressing out the deer or for survival use.

Sixth, ropes to haul the deer with and to tie it down for the ride home.

Seventh, a hat and gloves. It may rain while you’re out there, and you need to stay warm.

Eighth, two or three good buddies to go with you. There’s an old saying about hunting or hiking: “He who goes into the wilderness alone has foolishness for a companion.”

Ninth, a camera to record the trip and your prize. Savor the moment, as well as the venison!

You might also want to invest some time in studying animal tracks.

Have fun, and watch out for deadfalls and sudden dropoffs. They’re everywhere.
