What’s the best ammo for deer hunting with a remington 870 express?
scott asked:
Should I use buckshot with an improved or even full choke, or should I just use rifled slugs? What would be effective ranges for each?

Depends on who you ask…I only use rifled slugs but some guys swear by 00 buck shot. Also depends on your distance, accuracy and for some superstition.

The slug is best if you have a rifled barrel. It’s good out to about 100 yds. Maybe a little more if you are a really good shot.
Buckshot has less range. Realistically your looking for a shot under 75 yds to be sure. And dont use full choke with buckshot…try improved cylinder.

the remington buck hammer is perfect for deer, as the name implies, but you need to use an improved cylinder choke for it to work right in a smoothbore gun.

rifled slugs are much more accurate!!!
if you have a rifled slug barrel, use either barnes or hornady sst!
they are both really tight shooting, both keep touching groups at 100 yds with the hornady sst being good out past 150 and the barnes around 125.
if you’re smoothboring, use an improved cylinder with remington buckhammers, they’ll keep about a 4 inch group at 100 yds, but best kept in the 50-75 yd range.
870’s a great gun, just take it out shoot it, get good at it, and hunt the hell out of it.

I am old school…., A smooth bore shotgun with 2 3/4 inch slugs are all you need to drop a deer…..
You want a choke thats “open” so to speak… Some folks call it improved cylinder or smooth bore choke…. DO NOT use a full choke with slugs….
Avoid buckshot… That stuff is for really close ranges… With a bit of practice you should be able to hit a deer to 100 yards with no problems……
Don’t practice shooting at paper… That’s lame and you really don’t know if your hitting it unless you walk up and back to the target….
Practice with a reactive target… I shoot at 12 inch steel plates hung on chains… When you hit them you can hear it thru your earplugs and see it swing….

Manufacturers recommend you Only use a Improved Cylinder Choke when shooting Rifled Slugs from a smooth bore shotgun for Best Accuracy, Performance, and so you don’t damage you shotgun barrel.* Remington, and Federal Brand Slugs are Great.* Do not choose to shoot any Buck Shot for hunting Deer.* Use Rifled Slugs Only.* 75 to 100 yards is your Maximum effective range using rifled slugs.*

Make sure that you avoid Sellier&Bellot as it will most likely choke your Remington. My personal opinion is to go with the Remington Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded Sabot Slugs as I have heard many positive feedback regarding the quality and efficiency of this combination.
