I would suggest a 270. I use a sears 270 but that isn’t the best rifle.
The 270 gives good range and decent knockdown power but the bullet isn’t massive. It is good for deer but I wouldn’t suggest it for elk. The kick isn’t that bad either.

The Tried, True, Tested, and Proven 30-06.* It will harvest any game in North America.* You have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from for hunting or target.* Buy Remington or Savage Brand rifle.*

I’m a good guy, and I’ll gladly go deer hunting with you if you foot the bill. But seriously……..you’ll get a million different opinions on what the best “deer gun” is. A lot depends on where you hunt…wide open long shots, tight woods/brush with close shots, some areas are shotgun only, etc. If rifles are allowed, it’s hard to beat a 30-06 for a good all around deer rifle.

JPRay,
cant YOU find something else to do???
would you rather the deers home get cut down for people homes and then the deer run out in a road and get hit?
would you rather a deer starve to death b/c of over populating
if you did your research and knew what your talking about
you would think different. so shut up grow up and go do some
research!
i like the 30-30 best for deer hunting, its your going to be takeing a real long shot its not the best gun, but for hunting in the brush its good.

If you limit you shooting to about 150 meters ,use the venerable 30-30, or if you need a little more range use .308 Winchester or 30-06.

There are different species of deer, and they are found in many types of terrain, so one cannot recommend one rifle for every situation. I shot a huge whitetail in New Brunswick, Canada that was twice as big as any I ever shot before. I think it was almost as big as I am, i.e. 370 lbs. while most I have shot weigh 150 lbs. or so. There are moose in NB, so i took my Sako .300 Mag. I was glad I had it when I saw such a giant whitetail. My brother used a Winchester “M-94″ .30-30 lever-action, for he shot smaller deer at under 100 yards. My nephew got his first deer at age 11 with a Remington “700″ in .243.

I have lots of deer rifles, and I can say with some authority that the perfect deer rifle for my needs is usually the one I put down just before I chose the one I have with me when the shot presents itself.
